For parents of competitive female basketball PLAYERs
I Shook My Head No
The coach signaled for me to sub in. Most players live for that moment. I looked at the scorer’s table, then back at my coach, and I shook my head no.
I didn’t have an ACL tear. My body was fine. My mind was shattered.
Two NCAA championships at Stanford. All-American. The WNBA. And nobody had ever taught me how to train the one thing that decided whether any of it held up.
If you’re the parent of a competitive female basketball player who is great in practice and someone else in games, that is not a talent problem. It is the same thing that happened to me, and it is trainable.
MEET COACH Val
HI, I'M VAL
Age 11: got cut from the middle school cheerleading squad.
Age 17: won a national championship at Stanford. Assumed that was just how it worked.
Age 21: left as the Pac-10’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Two-time All-American. Two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year.
Age 27: made the WNBA.
Somewhere in there, I sat on a bench and shook my head no when my coach called my name.
I had strength coaches. Skills coaches. Thousands of hours on my game. What I never had was one person who taught me how to train the thing that actually decides what happens when the gym gets loud.
So I did what athletes are told to do. Worked harder. Trained longer. Pushed through every doubt until I couldn’t anymore, and I walked away from professional basketball for an entire season.
I thought that was the price of competing. That pressure was something you survived.
It isn’t.
I went back and studied it. Master’s in Sport and Performance Psychology. Certified Mental Performance Consultant®. National Advisory Board for the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Now I teach girls what I wish someone had handed me at 14

Sports Are 90% Mental.
So Why Are We Only Training the 10%
Coaches and parents tell me all the time: sports are 90% mental.
I agree. My lack of mental training forced me out of the W.
Then everyone goes right back to spending thousands on the 10%. More lessons. More clinics. More shooting reps.
Meanwhile she’s 0-for-6, she stops asking for the ball, and the best advice anyone can give her is “be confident.”
You can’t execute a feeling.
Toughness isn’t who she is. It’s a set of skills, and skills can be measured, built, and rehearsed. I call it Trainable Toughness.

Where to start
Most parents come to me after they’ve already spent thousands. Private lessons. Skills clinics. Maybe a book on the mental game. She picked up pieces, but nothing that held up when the whistle blew.
That’s not your fault and it isn’t hers. Nobody ever gave her the whole thing.
Here’s how we work together.
90 days, one on one. We use the Mentally StrongHER™ Method as the roadmap, but everything gets built around what we find in her. Private sessions, text support between sessions, parent touchpoints, and Academy access the whole way through.
The full system without private coaching. All nine steps, the Playbook, visualization audios, workbooks, weekly challenges, community, and live calls with me twice a month.
Groups/teams
I work with teams, clubs, and organizations to build a culture where athletes compete free instead of playing scared. Sessions get built around what your program actually needs.
Workshops/speaking
Keynotes and workshops for programs, clubs, and organizations. I tell the truth about what the mental game cost me, then give the room something they can actually use on Monday.
The Competitive Edge Strategy Session (Free)
Forty-five minutes, and she’s on the call with you. I take her through the nine areas that decide how she competes and score where she actually stands in each one. She answers in her own words, so nothing is a guess from the stands.
You leave with her plan. The two or three gaps costing her the most, why they’re happening, and homework she can start this week.
I only work with a small number of athletes privately, so this is also where I find out whether I’m the right person for her. Either way, the plan is yours.
